Queridos amigos - English version below -,



abajo reenviamos el mail de Todos por el Lago en relación al creciente florecimiento de cianobacteria en Atitlán, por favor léanlo y pásenlo a todo aquel que no lo conozca. En los últimos días parece que el diálogo en relación al estado del lago se está retomando, pero lamentablemente esto no es algo nuevo, durante años decenas de esfuerzos organizados, desde asociaciones de hoteleros, hasta asociaciones de vecinos, AMSCLAE, Amigos del lago, Pura vida, Vivamos mejor y decenas más. El drama es que, a pesar de todos estos esfuerzos no hayamos conseguido solucionar los grandes problemas del lago, qué nos pasa? qué se puede hacer? parece que la única respuesta es una pequeña revolución, al menos informativa, que haga que cada habitante del lago SEPA lo que está pasando con su entorno, así todos tendremos dos opciones, actuar u olvidar. Sin información no hay siquiera conocimiento de los problemas, cómo van a haber entonces soluciones??? En este primer mail nosotros estamos traduciendo al inglés la información que hemos recibido de TODOS POR EL LAGO, y estamos pasándosela a todos nuestros clientes y a cada uno de los miembros de nuestro personal. Les invitamos a hacer lo mismo, a formar parte de esta cadena.



Lamentablemente, parece ser que estamos ante un drama más serio de lo que nos gustaría creer, hace más de un año que vivimos señales alarmantes de que el lago está gravemente enfermo -florecimiento de algas, enfermedades cutáneas y estomacales de quienes nadan en el lago, cianobacterias e incluso hedores-, y creemos que en cierta medida intentamos no mirar la realidad por la gravedad de lo que implica, no hay peor ciego que el que no quiere ver y parece que en este caso lo que hay que ver es tan terrible que produce una ceguera casi automática. Realmente podemos pasar por el muelle de Tzanjuyu y pensar que toda esa basura humana puede ser absorvida por el lago???? Creo que tal vez lo que estamos viendo sea el comienzo de la muerte de una forma de vida de la que todos nos enamoramos en algún momento y por ello decidimos hacerla ¨nuestra¨ forma de vida, la muerte del lago sería la muerte no sólo de un ecosistema de ensueño -uno de los más bellos del mundo- y de pueblos ancestrales mayas que tienen mucho que enseñarnos, y mucho por vivir, sino también la muerte de este experimento sociológico del que de una forma u otra todos somos parte, un cóctel de gentes de diferentes nacionalidades, edades y culturas que nos hemos juntado aquí en un acuerdo tácito de vivir de forma distinta a cómo se hace en nuestros lugares de origen.



Desde nuestro punto de vista el grado de rapidez con la que el pueblo maya ha tenido que adaptarse a las consecuencias del (mal)llamado desarrollo industrial ha sido antinatural, y no les ha dejado espacio -ni tiempo- para poder entender los efectos negativos del consumismo y de la falta de tratamiento de deshechos. En este sentido los ¨occidentales¨ que vivimos en esta tierra que ha sido suya desde siempre, tenemos la obligación de hacer lo que sea posible para que estas gentes tengan ese entendimiento sobre cómo los subproductos de la sociedad de consumo pueden afectar a su entorno, y en último término a su forma de vida. La información ha de llegar no sólo a quienes tienen internet o hablan castellano, sería genial si cada uno de nosotros se comprometiera a pasar esa información a cada vecino, a cada persona con la que se encuentre, creando así foros de diálogo donde las ideas surgan y las energías se muevan en la dirección adecuada, la de salvar nuestro lago.



Con la presente sólo pretendemos hacer un llamamiento a que todos nos unamos para salvar este lago nuestro, y todos incluye a absolutamente TODOS los que habitamos este entorno maravilloso, niños, adultos, ancianos, gringos y no gringos. Los chapines tienen más capacidad de decisión política -vale, no es fantástica, pero al menos tienen capacidad de voto, de elegir a sus alcaldes y de sacarlos- y desde luego mayor conocimiento y una mayor conexión histórica con el lago, los no chapines tal vez tengamos un poquito más de entendimiento científico de lo que está sucediendo al haber sido testigos en el pasado de la destrucción de nuestros entornos de origen... sabemos más de los efectos a largo plazo. Unamos entonces nuestras fuerzas, montemos grupos de discusión, grupos de información mutua, reuniones en las que se expliquen a todas las partes lo que está sucediendo y lo que se puede hacer por el lago. Tomemos esto como una oportunidad para unirnos y estar juntos en algo, en algo que además, lo es todo.



De la cabecita de algunos amigos del lago hemos sacado ideas de puntos a debatir, entre ustedes, entre todos, como por ejemplo:

Montar reuniones de información en la que se explique no sólo en Español sino también en Kakchikel, Sutujil e Inglés el proceso que está sufriendo el lago, cuáles son los síntomas, cuáles las causas, y cuales serán los efectos tanto a corto como a largo plazo. La gente de Santa Cruz con la que nosotros personalmente tenemos contacto piensa que las algas vienen de Santiago, que alguien las ha puesto ahí... necesitamos organizar una reunión que informe a los cruceños de lo que está ocurriendo, ojalá que con algún traductor kakchikel... alguien se ofrece?
Informar, informar e informar, hacer carteles, flyers, dibujos, pósters, salgan a la calle a pasar el mensaje, el lago está super enfermo, sí, no exageramos, sólo miren la superficie del agua, miren los vertidos de Tzanjuyu... salgamos a hacer algo!
Recurramos a organizaciones internacionales, tanto de ámbito gubernamental como no gubernamental, a quien se nos ocurra, greenpeace, comisión europea para asuntos ambientales... estamos seguros que entre tantos habitantes y visitantes del lago hay miles de gentes con contactos, ideas, usemos facebook, lo que haga falta... promovamos que todo el mundo aporte algo, en San Lucas hay casonas de grandes empresarios guatemaltecos, pidamos su ayuda! sus contactos! lo que haga falta para conseguir fondos, subsidios y apoyo que financien estudios, ideas, plantas de tratamiento y tecnologías que nos den SOLUCIONES. Además necesitamos información sobre si es posible no sólo prevenir el florecimiento de bacterias sino si existen fórmulas para deshacerse de las ya existentes!
Hay que solucionar el vertido de deshechos -aguas fecales- al lago. Todos hemos oido alguna vez que varias embajadas e instituciones han ofrecido financiar la construcción de plantas de tratamiento pero no se han llevado a cabo, esto es cierto?? Desde aquí invitamos a todos aquellos que tengan conocimientos concretos sobre estos proyectos y sus fallos a que compartan esa información con todos, queremos saber.
Hay que cortar el uso de productos químicos en la agricultura. Esto implica no sólo una labor de educación de los agricultores , algo necesario a Largo plazo , sino medidas de emergencia más tajantes como la prohibición de estos productos en la cuenca del lago; como comentaba un vecino de Santa Cruz, si se puede hacer una ley que prohiba fumar, cómo no se puede hacer una ley que prohiba los dichosos fosfatos??? Las grandes fincas de café deberían predicar con el ejemplo y convertir sus plantaciones en orgánicas, dando así mayor valor a su producto -estamos en la era de lo Orgánico, palabra mágica en el occidente de hoy- y mayor fama internacional al café guatemalteco, cuáles son las posibilidades que tiene la sociedad presión para que esto realmente ocurra? a alguien se le ocurre?
Comencemos a INFORMARNOS a través de estos foros, hagamos algo ya, no esperemos a que las algas de la superficie se oculten temporalmente y podamos hacer como que no pasa nada, SÍ PASA y en el fondo, todos lo sabemos... comencemos por discutir ideas, montemos reuniones para que cada uno pueda aportar su granito de arena, sólo así conseguiremos salvar el lago. Nosotros ofrecemos lo que tenemos: nuestr a lista de contactos, nuestro tiempo para traducir, nuestro espacio físico como foro de reuniones y nuestras energía.

below we are fowarding the email from TODOS POR EL LAGO relating to the recent flowering of cianobacteria in Lake Atitlan, please read it and pass it along to everyone you know.





In the last few days we are living a recovery of the discussions about the state of the lake, unfortunately nothing new, in the past docens of actions have been implemented by different groups, hotels and neighbour associations, AMSCLAE, Amigos del lago, Pura vida, Vivamos mejor and dozens more. The drama is that despite these efforts we have not been able to solve the biggest problems of our lake, what is happening? what can we do? Seems like the only answer is to start a little revolution, a revolution at the level of INFORMATION, so that every single inhabitant of this lake knows what is happening with his environment, so that we all have to options, to act or to forget. Without information there is not even knoledge of the problems, how are we going to find solutions then??? In this first mail we are just translating into english the information we have received from TODOS POR EL LAGO, we are also passing it along to our customers and to every single member of our staff. We want to invite you to do the same adn pass the word along.



Unfortunately, it seems like we are about to witness a drama way more serious than we would like to believe, it has been a year now since we have started to see scary signs that something really wrong is going on with the lake water -algae, skin diseases and stomach problems of swimmers, dying fish, cianobacteria and even sewage smells-, and it feels like somehow we have chosen not to see those signs, there is no worse blindness than the one of who does not want to see and in this case, the reality we have in front of our eyes seems so terrible that it produces immediate blindness. I feel like maybe what we are witnessing is the beginning of the end of a way of life we all fell in love with at some point, that being the reason why we decided to make this our way of life. The death of this lake would be the death of a dream-like environment -one of the most beautiful in the world-, of the life style of ancient Mayan villages that have a lot to teach, a lot to live, and also the death of this little sociological experiment of which we are all part, a mixture of people with different nationalities, ages and cultures that got together here in a unwritten decision to live together a different life style to the ones we left behind back home.



From our point of view the pace in which Mayan villagers have had to adapt to the consequences of the so called industrial development has been unnatural - it did not leave them space or time to understand the negative effects of consumerism and of lack of inorganic rubbish -and other byproducts- treatment. Because of this, us ¨westerners¨ who inhabit this land that has belonged to the Mayan since the beginning of time, have the obligation of doing all we can for these people to have an understanding of how the byproducts of consumerism can affect their environment, and with it their way of life. There are dozens of admirable initiatives around the lake, both organizational and individual, both chapinas and gringas... the question is if this will be enough, if we will have enough time before it is too late. Maybe all of us could start promoting these initiatives in our daily life by informing every person we have contact with of all we know about the problems of this lake, specially our mayan neighbours. We will then be creating spaces for dialoge, where new ideas and initiatives may florish, where our energy moves in the right direction, that of saving the lake.



With this mail we just intend to knock at all the doors we can think of for ALL OF US TO UNITE TO SAVE THIS LAKE, all of us that live or love this wonderful environment, anybody of any age range, social scene, race or culture should unite in this. The chapines will have more political power -Ok, it is not ideal, but at least it is something: they can vote, get to choose their alcalde (or to kick him out), and have a more historical and practical connection with the lake, but the gringos might know more about the consequences of the destruction of an environment -sadly because we have witnessed it in our homelands- and the long term consequences. Let´s put together all this knowledge, all these forces, lets share them in discussion groups, in meetings to make sure all of us understand what is going on and what can be done. Let´s turn this into an opportunity to get together to do something, in something that this time is probably everything.



We have some ideas for disscusion we have obtained from neighbours and friends, could be little seeds for community dialoge:

Organise informative meetings that explain not only in Spanish, but also in Kakchikel, Tzutujil and English what the lake is actually suffering, what are the symptoms, what are the causes and what will be both the long term and short term effects. The people of Santa Cruz that we are physically and personally in contact with here at our Hotel think that this contamination is coming from Santiago, that someone has put it there. We have to hold a meeting, circulate flyers, publicise this information, to explain to the Cruceños what is actually happening and why, I hope that with a Kakchikel translator … any takers??
Information is the key, let´s inform de everybody, lets make signs, drawings, posters, get out there and pass the info alround, the lake is seriously ill, yes, we are not exagerating, you just have to look at the water surface, at the sweage in Tzanjuyu... let´s do something!
We have to appeal to international organisations, whether it be realm of govnermental or non-governmental, contact everyone we can think of , Greenpeace, European Comission for Environment... we are sure there must be inhabitants and visitors of the ake with contacts, ideas, lets use them! Lets motivate them! there are home owners in San Lucas from belonging to the enteprenereal world, let´s ask them for help! from the local business to the political world there are people who may have vested interests in the lake – whatever steps necessary to find funds, subsidies and international aid to fund treatment plants, studies and technologies that would give us organic alternatives to harmful phosphates, that is to get SOLUTIONS. We also need information about whether it is posible not just to prevent the growth of bacterias but if there is a way to undo the damage already caused by what already exists here!
We need to stop the sweage from going into the lake. We have all heard at some point that this and that embassy or organization has proposed to finance some treatment plant but then it has never happened, is this true? can anybody give exact information? we all need to know what has happened in order to take action...
We need to stop the use of chemical products for agriculture. This means not only educating the workers in the agricultural sector, but maybe taking more drastic measures like prohibiting the total use of these products in the entire surrounding areas of the lake; a comment made by a neighbour in Santa Cruz: if they can make a law that prohibits smoking in public spaces, why can´t they make a law that prohibits bloody phosphates!? The huge coffee plantations should have to set an example for all and make their crops organic, in this way also giving greater worth -come on, ORGANIC is a magic word today in the west!- and more international fame to Guatemalan coffee. But what is the likelihood that civil society has the power so that this is really going to happen­?
We need to begin to organise ourselves, do something now, before it´s too late, and not sit here waiting in the hope that the algaes on the surface disappear from sight so that we can act like nothing´s happened. IT´S HAPPENED, and there´s no pretending that this is just a surface problem anymore. Let´s start the DEBATE with this fórum and hold meetings so that every single person will contribute what they can, only in this way will we be able to save the lake. We are offering what we have: our doors are open to be used as a meeting space, we offer our time to translate and our energy, the important thing is to see that everyone is ready and is going to actually SPREAD THE WORD, this will be the seed towards change, hopefully!
